Candace Parker Bobblehead Day: Insult to injury

That's no way to welcome back Candace Parker.

The Los Angeles Sparks' star returned to Staples Center for game day Saturday - but for this? Or should we say, for that?

What is that? Who is that?

Remember that Lionel Ritchie video from the 80s where the blind chick sculpts his head and it looks nothing like him???  I'm just sayin'. Yikes. Poor Candace.

That was posted by a fan on wnba.com Sunday, a day after the Sparks welcomed back Parker. The third-year pro underwent left shoulder surgery last week after separating it June 13; it just so happened bobblehead day had been scheduled since at least April.

Superfan Sue Favor was so excited about this in the spring that she blogged this:

An email to Sparks season ticket holders this afternoon indicates they'll be giving out Candace Parker bobbleheads at the July 3 game. I am SO excited!! Haven't seen a bobblehead giveaway at a game in YEARS! And it's a CP bobblehead, to boot.

To (give it the) boot is right. Looks like eBay was getting $19.99 for these things. Did they display the picture? According to this seller (not on eBay), who waited a day to post the picture of Parker online, the bobblehead is 6.5 inches tall with a 3.25-inch circular base. The box apparently has three different pictures, and the fourth side lists Parker's bio.

Putting up my candace parker bobble for sale, just acquired at the seattle-los angeles game. 5,000 of them were available. very doubtful they were all distributed, since i saw staffers carting back boxes of them after the game was well under way.

Ha, maybe Parker pulled the plug herself on distribution at the game. There's no way she signed off on this - or that!

I'll show you my collection some time, I would say that this is a pretty good effort in this era of the bobblehead's comeback. Right now, I am looking at J.J. Hardy, Mark Grace, Jon Toews, and Ozzie Guillen. They all look the same except Ozzie's skin is a bit darker!!!

How long until we start to see sponsorship like this on the jerseys and uniforms of our major sport teams? I give it 5 years. What owner will do it first? I want to say Jerry Jones, but that uniform is too well known to tarnish. Maybe Mark Cuban. Probably a hockey dude.

Will there be outrage? Probably. If it keeps ticket prices down, I don't care. Isn't there an MLS team named after an energy drink?
